Californians United for a Responsible Budget (CURB) is a statewide coalition of more than 80 grassroots organizations with a mission to reduce the number of incarcerated people in California; reduce the number of prisons and jails in California; and shift wasteful spending away from incarceration and toward healthy community investments. CURB is a project of Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs, a fiscal sponsor that seeks to empower and catalyze projects to facilitate progressive change in the areas of social and environmental justice.

This grant provides CURB with flexible support to advance its multifaceted initiatives. CURB actively educates the public about the critical need for prison closure in California. Under this funding, CURB convenes grassroots advocates to collaboratively shape impactful reports such as “From Crisis to Care: Ending the Health Harm of Women’s Prisons” and the “Prison Closure Roadmap.” The coalition also engages in strategic coordination with state and local budget advocates through “A Budget 2 Save Lives,” a visionary blueprint fostering safe communities by investing in regenerative economies and a resilient social safety net. Additionally, CURB’s participation in co-sponsoring reform policies offers incarcerated individuals avenues for sentence reduction to effectively contribute to reducing the state’s prison population. CURB plays a key role in co-coordinating the efforts of Re-imagine LA County, further amplifying its impact in creating positive change.
