The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press was founded by journalists almost 50 years ago when the nation’s news media faced a wave of government subpoenas asking reporters to name confidential sources. Its mission is to protect the right to gather and distribute news; to keep government accountable by ensuring access to public records, meetings, and courtrooms; and to preserve the principles of free speech and unfettered press.

This two-year grant for general operating support will fund the core work of Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. The organization consistently receives more requests for help that extend beyond its current capacity. Support will allow the organization to ensure it has the capacity to respond quickly to emerging challenges and opportunities.

Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press is a key player in the space of press protection. The organization expects to increase both the number of cases it is able to take on itself and the number it refers to allied law firms. It will also seek to increase the issues it can address via its telephone hotline.
