Program Area

Based in Louisiana, Voice of the Experienced (VOTE) is a grassroots organization made up of a growing network of formerly incarcerated people and their allies to promote the human and civil rights of those most impacted by the justice system.

This general support grant enables VOTE to educate the public and policymakers in Louisiana about the destructive results of mass incarceration and the alternative, affirmative solutions to incarceration.

Led by people directly impacted by the justice system, VOTE members advocate for solutions that: 1) stabilize communities, such as access to affordable housing, jobs, and healthcare; 2) promote humane prison conditions, including educational programs and mental health services; and 3) help reduce stigma and discrimination for people with criminal records. VOTE is also a founding member of the Formerly Incarcerated, Convicted People and Families Movement national network.
