Five years ago, the Heising-Simons Foundation started the American Mosaic Journalism Prize, awarded for excellence in long-form, narrative, or deep reporting on stories about underrepresented and/or misrepresented groups in the American landscape. The prize aims to recognize and support freelance journalists with an unrestricted cash award of $100,000 per recipient, call attention to the recipients’ great promise, and to give them the freedom to continue their work.
On Thursday, June 2, the Foundation and guests were joined for a virtual event by two incredible journalists in Tonya Mosley and David Dennis Jr. Mr. Dennis, the 2021 recipient of the Prize, is a senior writer at Andscape, and has had work featured in numerous publications including Atlanta Magazine, the Atlantic and the Washington Post. Along with his father David Dennis Sr, he is the author of powerful and moving new book The Movement Made Us: A Father, A son, and the Legacy of a Freedom Ride. Mr. Dennis was joined in conversation by Tonya Mosley, who we are deeply honored to call a grantee partner, with her award-winning podcast Truth Be Told. In addition, Ms. Mosley is a correspondent and former host of NPR’s Here & Now.
We invite you to enjoy this conversation between Ms. Mosley and Mr. Dennis about his book, The Movement Made Us.
