Welcoming New Additions to the Journalism Portfolio

The Journalism portfolio recognizes and supports journalism as a critical element of a healthy and multicultural U.S. democracy. To achieve this goal, we support nonprofit journalism organizations across two focus areas: underrepresented groups and voices in media; and investigative journalism.

Over the past few years, the Foundation has focused on expanding the underrepresented voices area of the journalism portfolio. This year, we are proud to welcome new additions to the portfolio that elevate BIPOC, women, and LGBTQ voices. We hope you enjoy learning about our new grantee partners below and explore any and all of their journalism.

The Pivot Fund: The Pivot Fund is a new venture philanthropy organization dedicated to investing $500 million into independent BIPOC-led community news. Through grantmaking, development support, and strategic consulting, the Fund is disrupting journalism and philanthropy by centering and investing in BIPOC-led, culturally competent news organizations. The Pivot Fund invests in BIPOC-led community news through funding, capacity building, trainings, and opportunities for collaborative journalism.

The 19th News: The 19th is an independent, nonprofit newsroom reporting on gender, politics, and policy. The 19th’s goal is to empower its audience — particularly women, women of color and the LGBTQ+ community — with the information, resources, and community they need to be equal participants in our democracy.

Capital B News: Capital B is a local-national nonprofit news organization that centers Black voices, audience needs and experiences, and partners with the communities it serves. It produces in-depth journalism on topics of crucial importance to Black people across the country, such as education, housing, health, the environment, criminal justice, and politics. Capital B aims to be an antidote to the misinformation, disinformation, and low-quality, low-context news that clouds information pipelines.

Radio Ambulante: Radio Ambulante is an NPR podcast that tells uniquely Latin American stories. With over 200 episodes produced from more than 20 countries, Radio Ambulante is Latin America’s most ambitious narrative journalism podcast. It covers Latin American life with stories of love and migration, youth and politics, environment and families in extraordinary circumstances.

Additionally, the Journalism portfolio is proud of our many other journalism grantee partners, who include Futuro Media, Journal-isms, the Racial Equity in Journalism Fund at Borealis Philanthropy, and others. The portfolio’s underrepresented voices line of work also includes a selection of audio journalism partners, which you can read more about here.
