Futuro Media creates multimedia content for and about the new American mainstream in the service of empowering people to navigate the complexities of an increasingly diverse and connected world. Based in Harlem and founded in 2010 by award-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa, Futuro Media is committed to telling stories often overlooked by mainstream media. Its biggest program is the national radio show “Latino USA.”

This grant provides general support for Futuro Media. Futuro Media’s work in 2020 includes: 1) increasing the reach and impact of authentically told stories about people of color and marginalized communities produced by Futuro Media Properties, through projects such as “In The Thick,” a politics podcast from the perspective of journalists and issue experts of color; 2) creating journalism training programs and supporting new talent in partnership with the New York Women’s Foundation IGNITE! Fellowship and CUNY Cultural Corps; and 3) promoting a new standard for the types of voices, accents, and English allowable in media through “Latino USA,” the longest running national Latino news and cultural public radio program.
