Dr. Jochen Marschall Appointed Science Program Director

We are pleased to share that Dr. Jochen (Joe) Marschall, currently serving as interim Science program director, has been appointed as Science program director at the Heising-Simons Foundation.

Dr. Marschall was the first program officer to join the Science program team in 2015. During his time at the Foundation, he has been instrumental in developing initiatives across scientific domains, ranging from astronomy and astrophysics to climate science and fundamental physics. Dr. Marschall has built strong relationships within the scientific and funder communities and is committed to seeding diverse and innovative ideas.

“I am very lucky to work with an amazing Science team and Foundation colleagues,” Dr. Marschall said. “I look forward to continuing to support research in the physical sciences, illuminate our understanding of the universe, and elevate underrepresented groups in science.”

Prior to the Foundation, Dr. Marschall served as a senior research scientist in the Molecular Physics Laboratory of SRI International for 15 years, where he conducted research in materials science, aerospace, heat transfer, surface chemistry, chemical physics, and planetary science. He also spent seven years in the Thermal Protection Materials Branch of NASA Ames Research Center, where he performed modeling and laboratory work supporting heat shield designs for aerospace vehicles.
