Here are some news items that have featured our grantees in August 2018. Electric Vehicles and Advocates Public Utilities Fortnightly, August 2018 David Kolata, executive director of the Citizens Utility Board, writes this op-ed about the importance of engaging with stakeholders to ensure that, as transportation electrifies, “the traditional regulatory goals of safe, reliable, and affordable electric service are maximized.” The Citizens Utility Board is supported by the Foundation’s Climate and Clean Energy program. Arctic Science, Put On Ice Science Friday, August 31, 2018 Participants of the Northwest Passage Project, an expedition that aims at documenting the rapidly changing Arctic, joined Science Friday host Ira Flatow to talk about the science behind the expedition, which was unexpectedly put on hold when the ship carrying the expedition ran aground in the high Canadian Arctic. (Note: there were no injuries and all expedition participants are safe.) Both Science Friday and the Northwest Passage Project are supported by the Foundation’s Science program. High Costs, Limited Space Present Preschool Burdens for Bay Area Families San Jose Mercury News, August 25, 2018 71 percent of 4-year-olds in California are enrolled in a licensed center or transitional kindergarten for at least half the day. But according to a report by UC Berkeley’s Early Childhood Think Tank, access varies wildly. The report was supported by the Foundation’s Education program. US Plan for Coal Power Deregulation Could Cause More Deaths Associated Press, August 22, 2018 Following the federal administration’s decision to roll back the Clean Power Plan, the National Resource Defense Council and The Institute for Policy Integrity at NYU School of Law offered their insights for this news piece. Both organizations are supported by the Foundation’s Climate and Clean Energy program. Logic Puts Hundreds of Immigrant Children on Stage During MTV VMAs Performance ABC News, August 20, 2018 Hundreds of children and parents served by The National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA), Make the Road, and United We Dream joined rapper Logic at the MTV Video Music Awards for a moving performance calling for the end of family separation. The Foundation’s Human Rights program supports NDWA’s Families Belong Together campaign, which advocates for dignity and compassion toward immigrant children and their families. By Freezing Vehicle Standards, The Trump Administration Will Grind Auto Innovation To A Halt Forbes, August 20, 2018 Foundation grantee BlueGreen Alliance is cited in this op-ed that outlines some of the long-term impacts of the federal administration’s proposal to freeze fuel-economy standards for the U.S. auto industry. Home Visits from Education Experts Are Improving Outcomes for Philly Kids in Poverty Generocity, August 8, 2018 This article profiles home visiting programs in Philadelphia and mentions the National Home Visiting Resource Center’s 2017 Home Visiting Yearbook, which is supported by the Foundation’s Education program.
