Here are some news items that have featured our grantees over the past month: A Powerful Convergence: Community Schools and Early Childhood Education Kappan Online, February 2018 In this piece, David Jacobson, principal technical advisor at the Education Development Center (EDF), asserts that “the most successful elementary schools partner with community organizations to support young children and their families beginning in early childhood.” EDF is supported by the Foundation’s Education program. The Forgotten Zine of 1960s Asian-American Radicals Topic Magazine, February 2018 Journalist Jaeah Lee’s latest story delves into Asian Americans’ search for a new identity in the 1960s, at a time when the U.S. had defined race in terms of black or white. Lee is a 2018 recipient of the Foundation’s American Mosaic Journalism Prize. When is a Child Instagram-Ready? The New York Times, February 21, 2018 Common Sense Media’s report on how parents manage their kids’ media use is cited in this opinion piece about a mother negotiating her children’s social media habits. She Escaped Violence in El Salvador, But There’s Little Time or Resources to Heal While Seeking Asylum in the US PRI’s The World, February 21, 2018 Journalist Valeria Fernández’s latest story focuses on Yocelyn, an asylum-seeker and one of 17,000 people from El Salvador with cases pending in California immigration courts. Fernández is a 2018 recipient of the Foundation’s American Mosaic Journalism Prize. When a Generation Experiences School Shootings as ‘Normal’… San Francisco Chronicle, February 16, 2018 In the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, Youth Radio’s chief content officer and president Ellin O’Leary writes about what it means for our youth to think about school shootings as “normal.” Youth Radio is supported by the Foundation’s Community and Opportunity program. Second Federal Judge Blocks Move to End DACA CNN, February 13, 2018 “Today’s ruling shows that courts across the country agree that Trump’s termination of DACA was not just immoral, but unlawful as well,” said Karen Tumlin of the National Immigration Law Center, a grantee of the Foundation’s Human Rights program. New Chapter Begins for Kitt Peak Telescope Physics.org, February 12, 2018 The Nicholas U. Mayall Telescope is undergoing “the largest overhaul in its history” in preparation for the installation of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), a new instrument designed to better understand the physics of dark energy. DESI is supported in part by the Foundation’s Science program.
