The Racial Equity in Journalism (REJ) Fund at Borealis Philanthropy announced today that it has awarded $3.6 million in grants to 28 news organizations serving communities of color across the country.

REJ’s 2021 grantee cohort serves audiences who have been historically underserved by mainstream media, including  Black, Native, and Latinx people, immigrants, refugees, rural communities, and poor and low-income people.

Grantees represent a wide range of geographic areas throughout the country, including journalism organizations in Charlotte, Flint, Houston, Memphis, Minneapolis, and Seattle. The complete announcement can be found here.

Launched in 2019, the REJ Fund invests in news organizations led by and for people of color, bolstering a strong, diverse, and independent media sector.

The Heising-Simons Foundation is pleased to join other funders in this effort. The Foundation’s support of this fund is part of a portfolio of journalism grants made under the Community and Opportunity program, supporting and elevating underrepresented groups and content in journalism.
