News & Stories Preventing Firearm Violence Share By Holly Kreider on 10/30/2017 on 10/30/2017 “Mass shootings are reshaping the character of American public life,” Dr. Garen Wintemute begins in an open letter published this month in the Annals of Internal Medicine (ACP). “In the 10 years ending with 2016, deaths of U.S. civilians from firearm violence exceeded American combat fatalities in World War II.” Dr. Wintemute is a UC Davis emergency room physician who has been researching gun violence for the past three decades. He leads the University of California Firearm Violence Prevention Research Center (FVRC), the only state-funded research center of its kind in the United States. The Foundation’s Community and Opportunity program has supported the U.C. Davis Violence Prevention Research Program (VPRP), where FVRC is located. In the wake of the senseless mass shooting in Las Vegas that left 59 people dead and another 546 people injured, various national media outlets have sought Dr. Wintemute’s expertise and insights to better understand what the research says about firearm violence in the United States.
