Jochen Marschall is the director of the Science program at the Heising-Simons Foundation. The Foundation’s Science program supports fundamental research that is revolutionizing our knowledge and understanding of the universe.

Dr. Marschall joined the Foundation in 2015, where he was a program officer for Science until 2023. Before joining the Foundation, he was a senior research scientist in the Molecular Physics Laboratory of SRI International for 15 years, where he conducted research in materials science, aerospace, heat transfer, surface chemistry, chemical physics, and planetary science. He also spent seven years in the Thermal Protection Materials Branch of NASA Ames Research Center, where he performed modeling and laboratory work supporting heat shield designs for aerospace vehicles.

Dr. Marschall holds Ph.D., master’s, and bachelor’s degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
