Storytelling Math, a collaboration between Education grantee partner TERC and Charlesbridge Publishing, won multiple awards at the 2023 Mathical Book Prize, announced on February 15. Again, Essie! by Jenny Lacika won the Mathical Award for Pre-Kindergarten books, and Usha and the Big Digger by Amitha Jagannath Knight was one of two Honor Books for Pre-Kindergarten.

The Mathical Book Prize is an annual award for fiction and nonfiction books that inspire children of all ages to see math in the world around them.

This is Storytelling Math’s third year being honored. Storytelling Math titles won the Pre-Kindergarten and Grades K-2 2021 Mathical Book Prizes with Lia and Luís, Who Has More? by Ana Crespo, and The Animals Would Not Sleep by Sara Levine, respectively. Additionally, in 2022, Storytelling Math title What Will Fit by Grace Lin was named a Mathical Honor Book.

Spanish language versions of three Storytelling Math books honored by the Mathical Book Prize were named on The Children’s Book Committee at Bank Street College of Education’s list of the Best Children’s Books of the Year in Spanish this year. These three titles were: Los animales no se dormian by Sara Levine; ¡Essie! ¿Otra vez? by Jenny Lacika; and Lia y Luís: ¿Quién tiene más? by Ana Crespo. A fourth Storytelling Math book, Luna y su riquísimo dim sum, by Natasha Yim, was also honored.
