What types of skills are necessary to lead social justice and philanthropic initiatives? What does it mean to design a career in the social impact sector, and how can leaders best manage change and challenges?

Sushma Raman, President and CEO of the Heising-Simons Foundation, recently shared insights and tips on these questions during a live conversation with Craig Zelizer for the Social Change Career Podcast. The episode, titled “Scaling & Leading: A Career in Social Justice, Academia, and Philanthropy,” drew on Ms. Raman’s more than two decades of experience launching, scaling, and leading social justice and philanthropic programs and collaboratives.

Ms. Raman joined Heising-Simons Foundation in February 2023 as President and CEO, where she also serves on the Foundation’s Board of Directors. She is a Board Member at Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights and, prior to joining Heising-Simons, was the Executive Director of the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy, a research center at Harvard Kennedy School. In February 2024, Ms. Raman shared insights about her journey at the helm of Heising-Simons Foundation in an interview with Inside Philanthropy.
